Bannerlords; an FKRish narrative-y skirmish-y swords-without-master-y game

not sure where this is from
our BANNERS fly over our forces, singing loud of the nature of our army and we Bannerlords that command it.
the army has 1 banner that unites it.
each player has 1 banner of their own that flies over the soldiers they lead.

your enemy has 2 banners that speak to the nature of their army.

by choice or chance, this banner is...
  1. Scarlet: indulgent and lustful, excessive and cruel. Violence, flesh and pleasure. Overfull goblets, the cruel edge of a knife, needles dripping with joyful toxins.
  2. Cerulean:  disciplined and dutiful, acetic and serene. Knowledge, the heavens, and faith. Blind seers, sky-biting mountains, the taste of an oath on the tongue.
  3. Golden: grand and valiant, shining and arrogant. Charisma, wealth, and honor. Shining warriors, towers of alabaster, feasting halls ringing with brave boasting.
  4. Emerald: raw and wild, inevitable and furious. Freedom, earth, and  growth. Towering trees, huge serpents, tigers with flowers in their teeth.
  5. Violet: strange and silent, eerie and ethereal. Mystery, sorcery, and secrecy. Murmurs on the wind, moonlight caught in dew, a cat with the face of a woman.
  6. Ash: grim and ugly, blunt and bitter. Loss, death, and pain. Fly eggs in a wound, a boot crushing curled fingers, a child alone and lost.
to determine the nature of YOUR BANNERLORDanswer 2 questions, 1 according to the banner of the army, and 1 according to your own banner.

by choice or chance, you must reveal...
  1. what about your appearance strikes terror in the enemy?
  2. how you comfort the soldiers in your command?
  3. how do you protect yourself from harm?
  4. what is the most fearsome weapon you bear?
  5. what part of yourself have you been forced to replace, and with what?
  6. what desire has begun to consume you, and how has it made its mark?
to determine the nature of YOUR BANNERLORD'S SOLDIERS, answer the following 3 questions according to the Banner of your army and your own Banner. Then, roll for a 4th question and answer it according to your own banner.

you must reveal both...

  2. what do your soldiers do with their hard-won prisoners?
  3. how do your soldiers steel themselves for glorious battle?
  4. how do your soldiers heal their proudly worn wounds?
  5. how do your soldiers mourn the honored dead?

you must reveal both...
  1. what horrific weaponry does your enemy wield?
  2. what hideous armor protects your enemy from your blades?
  3. from what foul realm did your enemies spawn?
by choice or chance, you must reveal...
  1. what miserable creatures follow in your enemy's footsteps?

  4. with what unwholesome drugs and medicines does the enemy lick their wounds?

c'mon y'all it's frazetta

to DEFEAT THE ENEMY, each Bannerlord takes turns rolling a Wound Die and a Deed Die together. both dice start as a d6, but can be increased (for example, +Wounds: d6 to d8) or decreased (for example, -Deeds: d6 to d4). dice may only be increased to d20 and may only be decreased to d4. your army only uses 1 set of Wound Dice and Deed Dice (for example, if the Deed Die is decreased to a d4, all Bannerlords roll a d4 for the Deed Die).

if the WOUND DIE IS HIGHER, mark 1 Wound on your Bannerlord. your Bannerlord may take 3 Wounds before they are slain.

if the DEED DIE IS HIGHER, mark 1 Deed against the enemy. your enemy is defeated when you have marked enough deeds for victory, determined by the state of their forces.

if the DICE ARE TIED AT 3 OR LESS, your Bannerlord has suffered a mighty blow; mark 1 Wound and then choose +Wounds or -Deeds.

if the DICE ARE TIED AT 4 OR MORE, your Bannerlord has accomplished a mighty feat; mark 1 Deed and then choose -Wounds or +Deeds.

BEFORE BATTLE BEGINS, you must roll to determine where the battle is taking place, the additional features of the battlefield, where your enemy is positioned on the battlefield, and the current state of your enemies forces. this will increase or decrease your armies Wound and Deed dice, and determine how many Deeds are needed for victory.

the battle will be joined...
  1. along a steep ridge of loose rocks overlooking a surging river below
  2. in the depths of a pine forest, dense with black needles and knobby roots
  3. in a pitted waste of clay, slippery sinkholes studded with shards of stone
  4. in a bustling intersection overlooked by 4 looming temples, each heavy with statuary
  5. in a mountain field of thick grass and bright flowers
  6. on a road of white stone cutting through the heart of the heat-drenched jungle
where too..
  1. a torrential storm gusts and howls
  2. watchful bandits look out those caught alone
  3. huge predatory birds squint with yellow eyes
  4. thick fog shrouds the earth
  5. the plague-ridden remains of dead soldiers linger
  6. a house-sized hog makes its home
the enemy awaits...
  1. hidden from our sight; where are they hiding? (+Wounds)
  2. arrayed in splendor to their best advantage: where do they stand? (-Deeds)
  3. oblivious to our presence; where do they wait? (+Deeds)
  4. gazing at us from where we stand in glory at our best advantage; where do they tremble? (-Wounds)
  5. staring us down, each of us on risky footing (+Deeds, +Wounds)
  6. meeting our gaze, each of us fortified (-Deeds, -Wounds)
the enemy's forces are...
  1. many, fed and rested (12 Deeds to Victory, +Wounds)
  2. many, but exhausted and broken (12 Deeds to Victory, -Wounds)
  3. few, but fighting with cornered fury (6 Deeds to Victory, +Wounds)
  4. few, but every soldier a veteran (6 Deeds to Victory, -Deeds)
  5. many, fresh faced and fearful (12 Deeds to Victory, +Deeds)
  6. few, but loyal to the last  (6 Deeds to Victory, -Deeds)

once the battlefield and enemy position have been determined, it is time to PREPARE FOR BATTLE. each Bannerlord is allotted 3 hours before the battle is joined. we can each spend our time as we choose, making efforts towards strengthening our forces / exposing our foes (+ Deeds), or defending our forces / weakening our foes (-Wounds).

to do any of these things, 3 reasons must be given explaining how this effort was made and all 3 reasons must be accepted by the referee.

any action taken to establish a reason must take 1 hour. one person can spend all 3 of their hours to create 3 reasons by themselves, but cooperating allows each cooperator to spend hours working towards reasons; 3 cooperators could each spend 1 hour, for example.

Unlikely reasons can be made more likely through the spending of extra hours, or by ccepting a tradeoff (+Deeds : +Wounds or -Wounds : - Deeds).

once ALL HOURS HAVE BEEN SPENT, THE BATTLE BEGINS with each Bannerlord taking turns rolling the Wound and Deed dice until enough Deeds have been marked to succeed or until all Bannerlords have been slain.

AFTER THE BATTLE, whether  it is lost or won, the Bannerlords, even if slain, take turns describing either a Wound they suffered according to one of the enemies Banners, or a Deed they accomplished according to the army's Banner or their own Banner.

The Bannerlord who suffered the most Wounds and lived and the Bannerlord who accomplished the most deeds are then each given a Title according to their own Banner.

  1. This sounds super cool!

I really like this "low crunch, but high structure" approach some FKR-games like this are presenting. Feels like a directly playable generator.

Can't wait to try it out.
